Sailing the South the Pacific has always been a dream of mine. I had my own boat for years and really never getting to cruise. Louis got me out there, encouraged me to live my dream, and I will never forget it. The trip I did with Simpatica, from Panama to the Galapagos was amazing. We had such a great time during the passage. I learned so much about running a boat. I loved the feeling of comrodary, of accomplishing a goal together. And I really got to experience the cruising lifestyle Simpatica style, which is exactly how it should be.
There was always something going on during the 8 day passage. Luxuriating in the sun while skimming over calm blue waters, creating and sharing elaborate and delicious meals, fresh baked bread, the thrill of hearing the call “FISH ON” and minutes later eating sashimi complete with wasabi, the peace of starry night watches, seeing dolphins and whales, the teamwork of tackling the few inevitable boat issues we had and the adrenaline rush of the storm we battled. It was never boring aboard Simpatica.
Louis has been cruising for 10 years and has a gift for sharing. I have sailed with men before and talked to a lot of women who have cruised with their husbands. It is unusual to find a man who is so happy and willing to let others to get involved to whatever degree they want. To get their hands dirty and really learn by doing.
Once we got to the Galapagos the party started. Louis is a very social guy and is always befriending the other cruisers around. He is the first one zooming over the dinghy to help out a neighbour. When we pulled into the intimate harbour on Isabella where there were only 5 other boats anchored, we went around and invited all of them over for sundowners. We had about 15 sailors over in the spacious cockpit of Simpatica. Everyone brought a dish and drinks and we had a blast getting to know all of these amazing people. Our fresh fish bites were a hit. Each place we went Louis was talking to people on the VHF, helping people out and getting people together, creating a sense of community and friendship the way it should be on the water.
Over all it was a chance of a lifetime. I have made friends that I will have for life and memories that I will never forget. I will always be thankful for the opportunity to live my dream.
As I sit here curled up under a blanket hiding from the harsh, nasty weather in Virginia my mind wonders to the good ol’ days aboard SV Simpatica. While I freeze here in the States and my skin is as pale as a baby’s belly, I can’t help but think about what Julie and Captain Louis are up to. I find myself thinking about my amazing journey sailing the Caribbean last year. If I close my eyes and concentrate I can taste the salt water on my lips, feel the Latin sun warming my skin, sense the gentle rocking of the waves, and see the tranquil color blue of the ocean. My time aboard SV Simpatica obviously left a lasting impression on me. Sailing under a full moon with the wind blowing through my salty hair or dolphins swimming so close to the bow of the boat that I could reach out and touch them, both left me with the feeling of being alive and grateful. I was also fond of the moments of solitude and silence. I loved sitting out on the deck at sunset and ejoying the evening sun reflect off the 360 degree view of endless blue ocean. There were also the random visits to remote villages that opened my mind and spirit and broadened my perspective of other cultures. I should also mention the liberating feeling of showering off the back of the boat with absolutely no confinement and nothing between my skin and the ocean breeze. And the diving and snorkeling…. was great as well. Yes, it was a bit terrifying at times when I surprisingly swam next to a nurse shark, almost bumped into a a large barracuda, and had a huge ray swim under my toes, but it was all the more worth it. I miss the excitement of approaching land and finally seeing the first glimpse of the next island we were about to explore after having spent a day or two underway. I miss the adrenaline rush of fishing and the fight to see what was on the hook (whether tuna, mahi, sailfish, or maybe even a shark!) I miss the great conversation with Jules while she would be cooking another gourmet meal in the galley. And I miss the endless sailing instruction and story telling from Captain Louis. Both were extremely generous and comforting hosts. They not only taught me about sailing but also taught me a lot about life. I could go on and on with my story telling about island adventures, sea turtle spotting, indigenous villagers, lunches of fresh cerviche, dingy rides, pina coladas, kayaking, hammock relaxing, breathtaking reefs, lobster dinners, sunrises, movie nights, Jule’s freshly baked bread, shooting stars, mango smoothies, Louis’ fried fish, more pina coladas!, island hoping, and good company….. but I suggest instead of listening to my stories you should take my word and experience SV Simpatica for yourself and make your own lasting memories.
Cheers!

The Caribbean is a dream holiday that promised picture perfect deserted islands covered in coconut palm trees, crystal clear waters and sunsets that captured the superb experience of each day on the sea, (and pirates… although sadly Johnny Deep was no where to be seen!?) All those promises were daily occurrences and literally only just the beginning of the beauty we experienced while sailing on the Simpatica.
Captain Louis, master egg maker and breakfast extraordinaire, was not only a breakfast wiz, but sailed the sea’s with such expertise that our voyage was smooth sailing the entire time, despite the occasional but strangely pleasant storms we encountered due to it being ‘winter’ (an advantage for us fair skinned sailors!).
Taking us from one exceptional spot to another, Louis and his partner Julie (who greeted us every morning with a fresh fruit smoothie; the tricks of her recipe of which are now adapted into our everyday morning routine back in Hong Kong!) gave us the VIP tour, including only the best of the BEST locations! With incredible sea knowledge and a fantastic understanding of the local inhabitants (the Kuna Indians) travelling safe was accompanied with amazing interactions with the many tribes that are scattered over the Caribbean seas.
Louis was a delight to be around, never without a smile (or pink G-string!), positive and possibly the most giving person we’ve met in terms of assistance, time and teaching the ins and out’s of sailing! Hence the constant visiting Kuna Indians, who’d canoe over selling only there best products to the Simpatica. This made for amazing dinners fit for Kings, compiled of mountain sized crab, delicate conk and exquisite fish. Life was luxurious in every way on the Simpatica but the cherry on the top definitely came in the form of Lobster! (The huge pack of MnM’s came a close second) Butter smothered and perfectly BBQ’d or on top of nachos, Louis perhaps even out did his omelets with his Lobster creations!
Aside from eating our worth in fabulous food, we filled our days with snorkeling, swimming, sun bathing, sailing, canoeing, island exploring, reef admiring, cocktail making and cheese devouring, reading, cooking, noodling, raft-up partying, relaxing, relaxing, and r e l a x i n g! Bonfire making, starfish collecting, smoothie drinking, star- gazing, hammocking… It was never a dull moment yet always peaceful!
Sailing on the Simpatica was everything and so much more than you’d ever expect! It is all the delights of sea life compiled together, making for continuous realizations of just how beautiful life is and how blessed we are by what the world offers us to experience.
The wonderful generosity of Louis and Julie allowed us to take part in a new way of living, experiencing and viewing life. Without a doubt, a holiday of a lifetime! (And most probably transcending any travel plans in our next lives too!)
We wanted to thank you again for the best 7 days of our trip. We’re sorry it took so long for us to write, but we still haven’t forgotten the best week of our travels. We had been traveling for 6 months in South and Central America, and the best part was sailing with you on your beautiful boat. Between the food, the snorkeling, the islands, and kayaking, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Thank you so much for your kind hospitality; we truly appreciate everything you did for us. We feel so lucky to have found you. Thank you again, and we hope to see you soon, this time on our honeymoon, and so that we can finally meet your wife!
The trip took place in March 2009, lasting 3 weeks, starting in Roatan, Honduras, sailing to Guanaja and the Villorillos, Honduras; then to Providencia and San Andres, Colombia (islands off Nicaragua) and ending in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The trip was a true sailing adventure with at least 800 miles of sailing. I want to thank Captain Louis and Julie for providing this opportunity. They did a great job of taking our crew of 4 with generally little bluewater sailing experience and making us into a team that sailed, swam, dived, fished, snorkled, cooked, cleaned, maintained and just had a delightful time together. We all were able to pursue the things that interested us and learned a lot about the sailing life on a trip that really went somewhere versus the typical week of island hopping you might get in the BVI. We were truly part of the crew and got involved in all aspects of sailing (I wasn’t much of a cook but could wash dishes and repair a few things).
Simpatica is an outstanding catamaran which is big, fast, well equipped and easily capable of accommodating the 4 guest crewmembers. Cabins are roomy and comfortable and the cockpit and main salon, galley and navigation station have all the amenities including a great movie collection. The dinghy was great and easily accommodated all six of us for trips ashore and around the reef. Also there are 2 kayaks which were a blast to take out and explore the islands and reefs.
We all stood watch (usually 2 hours on, 6 hours off) and learned the navigation and radar systems. We generally had delightful weather and on the beam sailing (with a few rough beats and some motoring into the wind thrown in) on our trip with several overnight passages. The crew had some bouts of seasickness early on but quickly adapted to the sailing routine. Captain Louis was always available to help with any concerns from adjusting the sails and course underway, dealing with ocean traffic and assuring that the boat was very safely operated at all times. The boat is well maintained and equipped with excellent communications, navigation aides, safety equipment and medical supplies. We all got our turn at the wheel and learned a lot about sailing in all conditions, anchoring, mooring and all phases of operation of the boat.
Julie prides herself on keeping everyone well fed with gourmet meals and keeping a clean boat which really adds to the overall experience. You get to help with all these things but Julie really pulls it all together to make the meals come off without a hitch. Both Louis and Julie are well organized and assure that the boat is well provisioned with delightful foods. You can help do the shopping and planning of meals which gives you an understanding of what it takes to be prepared for several days at sea.
If you have an interest in sailing adventures in beautiful locations, I would strongly recommend that you check out Simpatica and Julie and Capt. Louis. Their approach to sailing and adventuring shows it is something they really love and that results in a very special experience for their guests. They plan to be in many great spots in their journeys to provide a variety of sailing opportunities. I’m already thinking about how to work in another chance to sail with them in the future. Julie and Louis – Many thanks again to you both for providing this unique opportunity for people to really experience the sailing world. Steer a course for me from time to time – “two stars to the left and straight on til dawn!” Bill Colorado USA
Hi, Louis and Julie! We just want to tell you how incredibly fun it was to sail with you guys! The Simpatica is an amazingly gorgeous vessel, but as beautiful as she is, the host and hostess made our trip even more memorable! It took us weeks before we stopped saying, after every meal, “but it wasn’t as good as Julie’s!” We still remember the banana bread! And Louis, you are such a great captain! Made us feel confident and comfortable while keeping us laughing! We look forward to seeing you again in the near future! Our love to you both always, John and Barbara Chaney
Thank you for the wonderful time on the sailboat. Sorry for losing the Mahi Mahi I cannot wait to sail with you two again. You guys have created some awesome memories for us!

Hi Julie and Louis,
I just wanted to say thanks for the great time on Simpatica! All the great food and confident navigation made for a very relaxed atmosphere. The diving at Cayos Cachinos and Guanaja was just what we had hoped for with vast coral heads and numerous locations. Visiting with the local people was a real opportunity to know what the Honduras area is like. Drinking fresh coconut milk right out of the coconut fresh off the tree and seeing it prepared by the local villagers was pretty cool. Julie, you are a great hostess and a fine chef. Thanks for introducing us to new foods and caring for any special needs we had.
Sailing on Simpatica through the Caribbean Sea was truly like staying at a 5-Star hotel, only better. We saw and did things that charter companies do not provide making this trip truly a fine value.
Thanks again and we look forward to our next sail with Simpatica and her talented crew-Julie and Louis.
Simpatica makes you a great home!
Sincerely,
What a wonderful vacation; the best vacation we have ever had. Louis you have great skills when it comes to sailing; we think you are an expert Captain and we enjoyed sailing to the three islands with you and Julie. We met so many people, a lot have known you for years and admire your talents. Julie, we can’t thank you enough for the wonderful meals you prepared. I just wish I had you for a cook all the time! I must say that on your vessel it was the best sleep we have ever had. We will never forget the good times on the islands we visited. The things we purchased go so well in our home and lots of people have commented on them. Wish I had bought more. Best wishes to you in your future voyages. Thanks again!

Thanks for the great time. Those two weeks were the best, with great food, snorkling, sailing and seeing the islands. The sunsets and sunrises were out of this world. I just couldn’t believe how clear and blue the water was. Terry and I both enjoyed the snorkling and seeing all the beautiful colored fish and the corrals. Both of you made sure that we had an enjoyable time. Again thanks for a great time, we will never forget our time sailing with you both. I now understand why you love to sail. There is such peace being out in the water away from people and the daily grind of living in a city.
Brother Louis-
Sounds like a lot of fun. The girls are well and wish we were there. I’m going to share the web site with some others who would like to live vicariously through your travels. Is there anything you miss about living on the mainland? Have you had any close calls with whales, sharks, or any other sea creatures? With the latest problems in the Indian Ocean off Africa’s east coast are you worried about, or do any pirates exist in the waters you all navigate? Where will you be on my birthday – February 20 and will it be possible to hook up with you? The girls are and I are getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Always on the go. Need to get some sleep. More pictures please.
God speed and smooth waters.
